If you have brought home a kitten, then you want to make sure you do what you can to provide that new pet with a happy and healthy life. Here are some of the things that you want to do in order to set your new cat up with a great environment:

Make it an indoor cat

One of the best decisions that you can make for your new cat is to make it an indoor cat. If you bring home a young kitten, then this is going to be easier than if you bring home an adult cat that's used to being outside and try to make them an indoor cat. However, with some work, you should be able to make most cats indoor cats. Indoor cats tend to have longer lifespans than outdoor cats for many reasons. Outdoor cats are more prone to illness, fights, wounds, infections, getting ran over, getting stolen, getting attacked by animals and even getting lost.

Get your cat their regular exams

You want to make sure you take your cat in for their regular veterinarian exams, just as you would your pet dog. Cats also need to be checked over to make sure they are still in good health and they also need to have their shots, need to have their teeth checked out and cleaned as needed and have any health issues taken care of.

Take care of your cat's nails

When a cat is outdoors, they will have their own way of taking care of their nails. They will use trees and other surfaces to trim down their nails. However, when you have an indoor cat, they won't have these things to scratch on. It is up to you to give them a scratching post, so their nails don't get too long. If the scratching post isn't enough, then you may even need to trim them yourself.

Allow your cat some outdoor time

Even though you have an indoor cat, you still want them to enjoy some outdoor time. You can teach your cat to walk on a leash and harness, then take them for regular walks. You can also buy cat fencing to create a fabulous outdoor cat area where your cat can walk around freely in the sun. You want there to be four sides and a top, so they can't climb out. You should create different levels for them to climb on and have toys and other goodies in it. You can build it near a window in the house, so they can come and go as they please.
